All Star Healthcare Solutions, a full-service healthcare staffing company specializing in locum tenens and direct-hire opportunities for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified registered nurse anesthetists, announced today it earned an Energage 2023 Top Workplaces USA Award. In fact, it was the highest ranked healthcare staffing company in the 150-499 employees’ group.

“We are honored to have our caring culture highlighted on a national stage, but even more so, we are humbled by the recognition because it is based on our people’s feedback,” said Keith Shattuck, All Star’s CEO. “By connecting providers with facilities, our All Stars truly make an impact on people’s lives. But they also are the heart and soul of our engaging and performance-driven culture, fully embracing our Core Values and delivering our signature “Red Carpet” Service to providers, clients, and each other.”

6 New Year’s Resolutions for Locum Tenens Providers

6 New Year’s Resolutions for Locum Tenens Providers

What are your new year’s resolutions? Well, if you wish for more scheduling control, greater work/life integration, and unique work opportunities in 2023, we suggest committing to the following six resolutions. Each one will help pave the way toward a successful locum tenens journey this year.

Resolution #1: Contact All Star Healthcare Solutions
This is the first step toward your first locum tenens job of the new year. Our recruiters partner with you to find the opportunities that best match your experience and personal expectations. They then walk you through credentialing, licensing if applicable, travel arrangements, and what to expect with orientation at the facility. In fact, our consultants remain accessible throughout the contract, ready to answer questions or provide support if needed.

Resolution #2: Collect documentation
Preparing for a contract, especially your first locum tenens job, entails a multi-step process. Our Online Services team is available to assist you through our streamlined application process, answering any questions you may have and help you easily navigate our Provider Portal. Next, it’s time to verify your education, previous employment, licenses and board status, and other background details. All Star’s licensing and credentialing experts are well versed in the various requirements. Still, compiling the expected documentation (hard copy as well as electronic) ahead of time helps keep the process rolling and gets you to your assignment as seamlessly as possible.

Resolution #3: Pack accordingly
What you bring on a locum tenens assignment varies greatly from what you would pack for a vacation. To make it easy, consider an expandable carryon suitcase. Not only do they allow for more items, but they also typically fit into a plane’s overhead bins so you can skip right past baggage claim upon arrival for shorter contracts. To get ready for each successive assignment, store a separate, fully stocked toiletries bag in your carryon as well as extra phone and device chargers or even a travel charging station.

Resolution #4: Travel efficiently
There are several items that will help make the travel stage more enjoyable, starting with registering for a TSA PreCheck. Skip the long lines at general airport security check-ins for the faster PreCheck station. Additionally, a quality travel pillow or compression socks can help minimize travel fatigue.

Resolution #5: Protect your privacy
Smartphones, Wi-Fi connections, and tablets or laptops add a level of convenience and connection while away from home on locum tenens jobs. However, they also present the potential for security breaches. Before heading out on your next assignment, invest in a portable virtual private network to build firewalls around your private electronic information.

Resolution #6: Be flexible
As a locum tenens physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or certified registered nurse anesthetist, you are walking into an established work environment. An open mind and willingness to adapt to the facility’s systems will help you acclimate more quickly and establish rapport with your peers.

To start your new year with a locum tenens opportunity, call All Star Healthcare Solutions today at 800-928-0229, or contact us online.

Seasonal Changes Give Locums Providers Countless Opportunities for Work and Play

Seasonal Changes Give Locums Providers Countless Opportunities for Work and Play

Do you find yourself dreaming of flying off to somewhere else as soon as winter approaches? Then maybe now is the perfect season to practice locum tenens.

Of course, winter has been a favorite time of year for physicians and advanced practice providers to accept short- or long-term assignments in warmer climates, but opportunities in every direction offer rewarding experiences.

Northern Highlights
Sure, December through March can be cold in the northern half of the country, but the demand for locum tenens professionals doesn’t hibernate. Patients and facilities still benefit from your skills and expertise, especially when seasonal illnesses cause the patient census to climb.

Being flexible with contract locations this time of year could produce more assignment variety for your consideration. If your priorities are facility size, patient population, or other practice-related details, then this region could be an ideal choice.

Mountain Fun
For winter sports enthusiasts, locum tenens opportunities out West or in New England serve up a plethora of snowy surroundings in which to play. Accepting short-term positions in these regions can turn the experience into a working vacation. Instead of taking time off from the job to ski, snowboard, snowmobile, or snowshoe on a personal trip, hit the trails after your shifts or on days off. Staying in town for a few weeks presents the chance to be on the slopes as much as possible during downtime and having the advantage of accessing a fresh snow or early/late season activity. You can even invite family and friends for a winter getaway with you while you’re on assignment.

West Coast Variety
Providers may enjoy the coastline temperature variations from Washington state down to Southern California. Locum tenens positions in this area of the country open the door to both cold- and warm-weather options — from cool in the Pacific Northwest to snow in the mountains of each state to the warmer deserts and beaches of Southern California. Plus, you can enjoy metropolitan areas — Seattle to San Diego — as well as small country towns. Confer with your All Star Healthcare Solutions consultant about seeking locum tenens positions throughout the region this season so you can experience it all.

The Traditional South
Historically, the late fall marks the beginning of the snowbird migration, when older citizens head south to enjoy winter in warmer climates. Florida, Texas, and Arizona have always welcomed this influx of seasonal residents. More recently, Nevada, South Carolina, and even Hawaii have attracted this demographic, too.

Whenever a town’s population grows, so does the need for clinicians. The fact that most snowbirds are older also increases the demand for medical services, which is why locum tenens opportunities typically expand in these states during the winter. However, the milder locales also appeal to a lot of physicians and advanced practice providers. If you would like to winter in one of these Southern states, then exercising flexibility in assignment details can enhance your chances of becoming a practicing snowbird.

Wherever you wish to go for locum tenens opportunities any time of the year, our All Star Healthcare Solutions consultants can help you get there. Call us today at 800-928-0229, or contact us online.

All Star Healthcare Solutions Adapts Company Events to Reflect Flexible Workplace

All Star Healthcare Solutions Adapts Company Events to Reflect Flexible Workplace

More than two years ago, All Star Healthcare Solutions, one of the largest healthcare staffing firms in the country, switched to an entirely remote workforce to insure the well-being and safety of our people throughout the pandemic.

Earlier this year, however, we moved to a flexible workplace model, which allows people to choose whether they prefer to work from the office regularly or occasionally or remain exclusively remote. This prompted the All Star Executive Leadership team to rethink how we celebrate our award-winning, caring culture. More specifically, company events are now designed to enable attendance either in person or remotely.

“Our people are the heart of All Star’s culture and we are always striving to improve our support of them professionally and personally. As we continue to expand our All Star family outside of Florida, it’s essential we make sure everyone feels valued and connected. By offering a variety of ways to participate in company activities, everyone can feel welcomed, whether that is at the office, at an offsite location, or virtually from their home office,” says CEO Keith Shattuck.

One of the first flexible celebrations this year was Halloween. All Stars were invited to work in the office that day and participate in a costume contest and pizza lunch party. Employees who aren’t local and/or opted to work remotely also were encouraged to compete in a costume contest by submitting photos of themselves in their spooky getups. Separate honors were awarded to three winners in each category, Remote and In-Person.

Earlier this month, the company held its inaugural All Star Family Fun Day. Every employee was invited to attend an off-site event at the largest indoor entertainment venue in Florida, which featured go-karting, roller skating, arcade games, virtual reality games and escape rooms, a ropes course adventure, team competitions, and more. We also invited our extended All Star family – our people’s family members, friends, and/or significant others – to enjoy the fun. What’s more, the company flew in every All Star who lives and works outside of South Florida and who wanted to participate, paying for hotel, flight, and ground transportation.

“Our Core Value, ‘Fun is Fundamental,’ has been especially important over the past few years. Now, we have the opportunity to make All Star get-togethers even more inclusive by designing them for both in-person and remote participation so everyone can enjoy them regardless of their location,” says Ken Bernstein, All Star President. “Our first two flexible events were a lot of fun, and it was great to see All Stars embrace both types of participation. We are committed to exploring additional ways to connect with each other and strengthen our people-centric culture.”

All Star President Ken Bernstein Embraces Community Spirit

All Star President Ken Bernstein Embraces Community Spirit

All Star President Ken Bernstein Embraces Community Spirit

This Veterans Day weekend, you’ll find All Star Healthcare Solutions President Ken Bernstein tackling the four-mile beach course in the sixth annual Ryan Owens Memorial Run. Although he enjoys the physical challenge, Bernstein’s motivation is all about showing up for the veterans’ community, a commitment he fulfills through many efforts. In fact, Bernstein positively impacts numerous people in South Florida and beyond through his involvement with the following organizations:

Wounded Veterans Relief Fund
The Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF), based in North Palm Beach, Florida, is a non-profit organization that delivers various support programs to qualified veterans living in the Sunshine State, including emergency financial aid and dental services. For the past couple of years, Bernstein has participated in several WVRF fundraising events, such as the recent Devil Dog 5K/10K Race/Walk in Boca Raton, Florida.

“I have a lot of friends and family members who are veterans, and I’ve become very close with several of the WVRF members over the years, not to mention that we have veterans in our All Star family. It’s amazing to see them band together to support each other. The issues veterans face are tremendous and charities like the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund help so much. It’s pretty magnificent,” says Bernstein.

Not only did he run in the past two Devil Dog races, but Bernstein petitioned the All Star Cares Committee, which determines the company’s philanthropic commitments, to sponsor this year’s event. He also inspired other All Stars to race with him.

“Last year, I ran the race alone. But once I experienced the spirit of the event, I thought, ‘We have to get All Star involved.’ This year, an amazing crew showed up to support the cause and cheer each other on,” he said. “Now that I see how many people came out and how much they enjoyed the day, I want it to be even bigger next year.”

Ryan Owens Memorial Run
As noted, Bernstein also champions the Ryan Owens Memorial Run, which is sponsored by the Naked Warrior Project, based in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The run’s namesake was a Navy SEAL who lost his life in the line of duty, and the non-profit organization’s mission is to honor Owens, his fellow Navy SEALS who have fallen, and their families. It also assists veterans facing challenges back home.

“I was introduced to the run by WVRF members, but immediately saw that this was an All Star thing, too. A bunch of people from All Star had entered that year as well,” says Bernstein. “I hope this year also has a good turnout. We’d like to get as many people to participate as we can.”

“Ken pushes himself to raise funds and encourages others to get involved for the vets because their service to our country oftentimes comes with a heavy cost,” says Lee Kennedy, chief operating officer for All Star.

Eileen’s Home for the Holidays
Bernstein’s philanthropic spirit extends beyond the veteran community. For years, he and his family have supported Eileen’s Home for the Holidays, a non-profit established by a personal friend to honor the life of his mother Eileen Connolly, who passed away from cancer. The organization is based in Sayville, New York. Every Christmas, volunteers set up a “pop-up restaurant” in a local church to serve the homeless and families in need. Each person is treated to a fine dining experience, complete with host/hostess and menu, with most food donated by local eateries. Attendees are welcomed to select from the donated clothing, toys, and other necessities.

“To have that experience, which is different from other meal programs, is pretty special,” says Bernstein, who has both volunteered at the event as well as fundraised for it.

Additionally, the All Star Cares Committee will sponsor the program again this year.

“All Star is all about giving back to communities, like my hometown in New York. Everyone is beyond caring and giving, especially when kids are involved, like making sure they have a happy holiday,” says Bernstein.

The Jorge Nation Foundation
Indeed, creating special memories for children facing terminal or serious health conditions inspired Bernstein to join All Star’s CEO Keith Shattuck in serving on the Jorge Nation Foundation (JNF) board of directors. As treasurer, Bernstein implements the Boca Raton-based charity’s financial strategy, management, and regulatory compliance and reporting.

Every year, JNF selects children from South Florida dealing with the heart-wrenching circumstances of life-threatening or life-changing illness to partake in a “Dream Trip” to a destination of their choice. Past trips have been on cruises, to California, and even to Costa Rica. It partners with leading local pediatric hospitals, including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

“Nothing compares with the children’s responses when they learn they and their family have been selected to go on a ‘Dream Trip.’ It’s a humbling experience to witness, and Ken’s involvement will ensure JNF can continue delivering its incredible and heartwarming mission of creating extra-special memories for these kids and their families,” says Shattuck.

“Ken has a heart of gold and truly cares for the people around him and does so much to give back,” adds Kennedy. “It’s an honor to have All Star and our people follow his example.”

Non-Clinical Skills Enhance the Locum Tenens Experience for Providers, Colleagues and Patients

Non-Clinical Skills Enhance the Locum Tenens Experience for Providers, Colleagues and Patients

Non-Clinical Skills Enhance the Locum Tenens Experience for Providers, Colleagues and Patients

Presenting physicians and advanced practice providers who are committed to delivering high-quality patient care is top priority for All Star Healthcare Solutions. When matching individuals to locum tenens jobs, the first determinant will always be ensuring their clinical expertise and experience meet the demands of the facility and position. However, a rewarding locum tenens experience for clinicians and clients also is defined by a person’s aptitude for melding into the workplace. That’s where soft skills take center stage.

Various research has examined the correlation between healthcare providers’ abilities to communicate, empathize, and convey a confident attitude with positive patient responses and treatment compliance. Not coincidentally, those same characteristics help clinicians build relationships with colleagues, especially when professional connections must be established in the condensed timeframe of a locum tenens assignment. Here, we expound on several soft skills and how they add value for locum tenens professionals, their co-workers, and vicariously, patients.

Communication
The value of effective communication skills cannot be overstated, especially when you walk into an unfamiliar setting with the expectation that you will begin caring for patients as soon as possible. Strong communication skills—active listening, concise language, and most importantly, a friendly, collegial tone that conveys professional respect—set the basis for cooperative relationships. For example, ask clearly stated questions to solicit specific information to help you adjust to the environment. Of course, as you and the staff become more acquainted with each other, it’s acceptable to adopt a more conversational tone when appropriate.

Empathy
Expressing care and compassion for patients and their family members during stressful times of illness or injury is a critical component to delivering high-quality care. Demonstrating empathy toward co-workers while on a locum tenens contract serves an equally valuable purpose. Facilities engage locum tenens professionals to fill a need—personnel could be working short staffed, dealing with increased patient census, or any other reason that demands supplemental staff. Appreciating their circumstances will assist you in understanding the clinical atmosphere. Empathizing with staff can encourage acceptance of the locum tenens role in the care of their patients.

Teamwork
Naturally, this soft skill goes hand-in-hand with communication and empathy. As a locum tenens provider, you become a member of that facility, clinic, or private practice while on assignment. Eliciting a sense of camaraderie among colleagues and support staff builds confidence and reinforces the value you add to their team, especially if the staff is not accustomed to practicing alongside locum tenens physicians and advanced practitioners.

Stress and Time Management
While these soft skills directly impact an individual’s ability to function on duty, incorporating methods to manage time benefits patients and peers, too. Reducing wait times and sharing caseloads, for example, lessen stress levels for all.

A Receptive Attitude
Exercising an open mind toward how clinical environments operate and how other clinicians care for patients is a valuable skill for locum tenens professionals who practice in multiple facilities. A receptive attitude solicits support from others as well as opens the door to possibly broadening your own knowledge base. For instance, locum tenens jobs offer providers insights into regional and cultural influences on healthcare.

Flexibility
This trait is especially applicable to the locum tenens practice. Being flexible in the type of short- or long-term opportunities you consider—such as facility size or patient population—enables your All Star Healthcare Solutions’ consultant to present more potential matches. Being amenable to shift schedules welcomes more contract possibilities. An adventurous nature that invites unprecedented personal experiences along your locum tenens journey could surprise you with an ever-expanding friends’ group from the many co-workers you meet along the way.

Recurring Locum Tenens Opportunities Benefit Providers, Facilities, and Patients

Recurring Locum Tenens Opportunities Benefit Providers, Facilities, and Patients

Recurring Locum Tenens Opportunities Benefit Providers, Facilities, and Patients

The locum tenens relationship has many beneficiaries: Physicians and advanced practitioners are empowered to configure their schedules for greater work/life integration, for example, and healthcare organizations rely on locum tenens professionals to fill staffing voids and provide patients with high-quality care. However, that relationship can be further enhanced when locum tenens providers and facility administrators agree to turn the temporary position into an ongoing engagement.

Providers Enjoy a Sense of Stability
Schedule flexibility is one of the most popular incentives for physicians, NPs, PAs, and CRNAs to accept locum tenens jobs. That said, it does not have to mean a lack of schedule stability.

Providers can customize their locum tenens approach to what best suits their preferences—such as accepting only the occasional moonlighting job or turning the career alternative into a full-time practice. Additionally, not every assignment has to have a firm end date. Nor do clinicians need to move onto the next facility, unless that’s their preference. If you would rather create a familiar locum tenens routine, then consider accepting regularly scheduled, or recurring, assignment dates.

Recurring contracts are distinguished by the fact that locum tenens providers return to the same hospital, clinic, or healthcare organization on a defined, repeating basis. That could work out to be one long weekend every month, one week a month, every two weeks, or whatever arrangement is agreed on by provider and facility. The predictability of recurring assignments enables clinicians to plan personal and other professional commitments. Simultaneously, they offer the latitude to build in well-deserved breaks to decompress or engage in spirit-affirming activities that help prevent burnout.

What’s more, physicians and advanced practitioners can expand their comfort levels with the facility and community with each appearance—less time required to get oriented equals more time to focus on delivering high-quality care to people.

Facilities Also Enjoy a Sense of Stability
Locum tenens providers assist facilities in insuring continuity of care. Plus, bringing in additional clinicians helps lighten the caseload for permanent staff members, reducing the need for overtime, and thereby, lessening at least one factor known to contribute to provider burnout.

Recurring contracts with specific locum tenens practitioners add the benefit of familiarity. Both clinician and facility staff get to know each other a little more with each set of shifts. That eases acclimation and builds trust, both of which enhance continuity of care and encourage collegial working environments.

Patients Benefit, Too
Patients are the ultimate beneficiary of the locum tenens relationship. Consistent schedules between facility and locum tenens professionals facilitate deeper associations with patients and families, a component that’s been linked with greater patient satisfaction. Reconnecting with people to address their ongoing health concerns also illustrates for clinicians how impactful they can be, and that acknowledgement can promote greater career satisfaction.

Mindfulness Practices to Enhance the Locum Tenens Experience

Mindfulness Practices to Enhance the Locum Tenens Experience

Colin O’Brady walked his way into the record books by being the first solo, unassisted human to traverse Antarctica on foot. In an interview with Field Mag, the explorer and endurance athlete explained how practicing mindfulness with every step helped him reach his destination. But you don’t have to be an extreme athlete to benefit from the art of being mindful. Indeed, the meditative tool can help with adjusting to new locum tenens jobs.

Here, we’ve assembled a brief overview of various mindfulness exercises and how you can utilize them along your locum tenens journey.

Defining Mindfulness
First, mindfulness generally is defined as a conscious awareness of the present moment and all it entails, such as current feelings, thoughts, senses, as well as the impact of your immediate environment. For some people, reaching that state entails traditional meditating, such as finding a quiet, solitary space where you can focus on breathing and tune out distractions. However, redefining what mindfulness means to you empowers individuals to practice it in any environment at any moment.

A Welcoming Openness
This state of mind describes the ability to shed preconceived ideas, making room to welcome in the new. Arriving at an unfamiliar facility for a short-term contract with an open mind means being willing to look at how the unit is set up and how it works for the permanent staff without determining how it isn’t what you are used to. Differences sometimes offer unexpected benefits or present alternative approaches that you can incorporate into future assignments.

Encouraging Sociability
Instead of focusing on the orientation or jumping ahead to how you will adapt to a new setting, switch your full attention toward the co-workers as you meet them. Although a simple gesture, that polite, dedicated engagement could encourage staff to reciprocate the friendly welcome. Also, by being an attentive listener, you may pick up on key bits of information regarding how the unit functions or interesting tidbits that will help you learn people’s names more quickly, which is appreciated by all.

Managing Stress
Much has been reported about the increasing rate of burnout among healthcare professionals. A study by MetLife found that 42 percent of healthcare workers feel stress on the job, and nearly the same percentage has feelings typically associated with burnout. Practicing mindfulness can help individuals cope with these conditions. The act of taking an inventory of the moment, when appropriate and time permitting, along with calming breaths can help release stress and regain perspective.

Focusing on Quality Attention
A core characteristic to mindfulness is a higher degree of attention given to people and tasks. In many ways, that’s a key factor to locum tenens practice, too. Without the addition of administrative responsibilities and meetings, physicians, NPs, PAs, and CRNAs have the freedom to direct more of their attention toward patient care. Also, downtime while on assignment is more flexible, not automatically filled with to-dos. This frees up your thoughts after work to concentrate on me-time or checking in with family without multitasking. In fact, providers who pursue locum tenens full time are able to give loved ones their full attention between assignments without daily commutes, office hours, or work interruptions.

Enjoying Moments
Working locum tenens offers many benefits, like giving individuals the opportunity to explore communities and find out what makes them unique. Being open to meeting people outside the job and engaging in different activities simply for the fun it could be considered another form of mindfulness. Plus, enjoying oneself helps to minimize work-related stressors and adds personal rewards to the locum tenens experience.
