Where Compassion Meets Care: Celebrating Mabel for CRNA Week

Every patient remembers how they were made to feel, especially during their most vulnerable moments. A reassuring voice, a steady hand, or a kind smile can turn anxiety into calm, fear into trust, or a routine procedure into a genuine human connection.

At All Star Healthcare Solutions, our providers do more than fill shifts. They touch lives, bringing skills and compassion wherever they’re needed most. Their influence often reaches far beyond a hospital bedside or quiet exam room. It echoes in the memories of those they’ve comforted long after care ends.

Recently, Mabel OkungbowaCRNA, experienced that truth firsthand. Since January, she’s been on a locum tenens assignment with All Star at a hospital in West Virginia. She’s been consistently delivering exceptional clinical care, easing anxieties, and supporting the facility’s team with her expertise and grace. It was on this assignment, as the steady rhythm of her day unfolded, that Mabel was handed a message — a print-out of feedback submitted to the hospital by one of her patients. Its words carried the quiet but powerful weight of gratitude:

“Mabel Okungbowa, CRNA, helped me this morning during my procedure. She was the kindest staff member and made me feel safe in her hands. She was very patient and took the time to explain everything to both me and my husband. She went above and beyond to make me feel valued and comfortable… It eases my mind to know there’s a kind woman like Ms. Mabel to take care of me.”

It was a small piece of paper, but it embodied the enormous impact of her work — a tangible reminder that the comfort, patience, and attention she gives every day truly matter. The hospital staff were just as moved by the patient’s words. To celebrate Mabel, they treated her to a meal — a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for the care she gives so freely.

The Heart Behind Every Assignment

After reading the patient’s message, Mabel knew she had to share it with her All Star consultant, Lauren McDonnell. She sent her a snapshot of the paper, along with her own reflection on supporting patients at their most fragile.

“This truly warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes. I am completely humbled, and wanted to share this with you,” she wrote to Lauren. “I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to serve as a helper in healthcare rather than being on the receiving end. My patients are in the most vulnerable times of their lives, and it’s never by their own doing — it’s simply called life... Lauren, I am grateful to work for an angel like you and for All Star.”

Lauren is no stranger to Mabel’s caring spirit. She describes her as a kindhearted, driven, patient, and empathetic person who always puts others before herself. After more than a year of working together, Mabel and Lauren have developed a close bond that goes beyond professional partnership.

“I consider her family,” Lauren said. “Mabel always goes the extra mile to ask how my day was and always takes it a step further to ask how my family is doing. She is very caring and reminds me that the little things can go such a long way. I appreciate Mabel more than she will ever know.”

Reading the patient’s message, Lauren felt the profound fulfillment of seeing Mabel’s dedication appreciated:

“Seeing my provider’s care recognized by patients and facilities is such an amazing feeling. It is extremely motivating and rewarding to know that Mabel is being seen and acknowledged for the thing she loves and values most... caring for her patients.”

For Lauren, stories like Mabel’s capture the heart behind every assignment — the real connections and moments of compassion that define All Star’s work.

“As a consultant, it is heartwarming to hear the impact that our providers have on their patients and the lasting memories they create,” she said. “It is motivating to keep doing what I love daily so my providers can continue to touch hearts. It’s also an indescribable feeling to see our providers give “Red Carpet” Service to their patients, just as the All Star team does for our providers, people, clients, and community.”

The Enduring Effects of Empathy

Mabel’s story is a true testament to the enduring effects of a provider’s empathy. It also demonstrates the trust and support that flow between patients, providers, and consultants alike.

At All Star, we’re proud to collaborate with providers like Mabel — professionals who embody excellence, warmth, and the courage to create meaningful impact every single day. Their dedication reminds us why we do what we do: to bring humanity to healthcare.

Thank you to Mabel and all the other incredible providers out there for making people feel seen, safe, and valued when they need it most.

Make a Difference with All Star

At All Star Healthcare Solutions, we believe every assignment is more than a placement — it’s an opportunity to create a lasting impact. Whether you’re a provider ready to share your skills or a healthcare facility seeking compassionate support, we’re here to help build connections that change lives.

All Star Payback: Mission Accomplished! Celebrating Five Extraordinary Healthcare Professionals

Locum tenens providers play a critical role in keeping hospitals running, reducing burnout for permanent staff, expanding access to care, and ensuring patients receive the treatment they need, when they need it. The Payback Campaign was born from one simple idea:

Let’s give a little something back to the people who give everything.

More than 3,600 clinicians participated, sharing stories of purpose, resilience, humor, heartbreak, and hope. So many of the videos about what it means to be a healthcare provider reflected the courage and compassion of those who keep healthcare moving forward. Five winners were selected at random.

Today, we’re proud to highlight five remarkable professionals whose stories represent five different disciplines — and who embody exactly why we created this campaign:

  • A Physician Assistant shaping patient experiences with empathy and clarity
  • A CRNA bringing lifesaving anesthesia care to underserved communities
  • A Nephrologist caring for chronically ill patients with holistic compassion
  • A Pulmonologist & Critical Care physician saving the sickest of the sick
  • A Cardiothoracic Surgeon performing some of medicine’s most complex procedures

These heroes make healthcare work — and make access to care possible for thousands of families each year.

Meet the 2025 All Star Payback Winners

Courtney Kingston, PA-C — Physician Assistant

Strength, resilience, compassion

Courtney’s path began when she listened to a patient’s heartbeat for the first time at age 13 — and she never looked back. Her rigorous training made her adaptable across every setting, and today she serves patients by slowing down, explaining complex terms, and making their care feel less frightening.

She hopes to use her prize to visit family and give back to others.
Her philosophy:

“Being a PA means joining the large healthcare system to be a partner in the community’s health.”

Lance Machado, CRNA — Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Compassion, preparation, and service to underserved communities

Growing up in rural Kansas, Lance saw firsthand the consequences of limited healthcare access. As a CRNA, he now brings lifesaving anesthesia services to communities that need them most — from complex cases to hospitals running thin staffing.

He entered the contest “on a whim” while throwing a ball for his dog, Steve. His plans?

“It’s going toward fencing the yard for my dog Steve. He’s really going to appreciate this.”

Dr. Waqas Memon — Nephrologist

Holistic care, deep compassion, and family-centered purpose

Dr. Memon entered medicine after losing his grandmother to a misdiagnosis at age 12 — a moment that shaped his lifelong purpose. Nephrology challenged him intellectually and emotionally in all the right ways, and today he focuses on providing thoughtful, holistic care to patients who are often overlooked.

He chose locum tenens work to spend more time with his young children.

“With locums, I’m able to make close to what I was making before while still having time at home — picking them up from school and spending time with them.”

He plans to use his Payback prize to help pay down his wife’s student loans.

Dr. Taiwen Chen — Pulmonologist & Critical Care Physician

Saving lives, battling burnout, and rediscovering joy in medicine

Inspired by a family member with polio, Dr. Chen found her calling in critical care — a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where she treats the sickest of the sick. After years on the front lines, especially during COVID-19, she turned to locum tenens to regain balance and joy.

She uses her experience to uplift families during their darkest moments.

“Every time someone comes off life support and then comes back two years later to say thank you — that’s what makes it all worth it.”

Her Payback prize will help her travel, reset, and support her daughter who is in college.

Dr. John Anastasi — Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Precision, purpose, and the power to save lives

Dr. Anastasi didn’t begin his career aiming to become a surgeon — or even a doctor. But one day in an NYU operating room changed his life forever. Today, he performs highly complex, minimally invasive heart surgeries that save and transform lives.

He balances a demanding surgical career with a passion for writing and creative work, proving that purpose can be both technical and artistic.

“It means taking care of the most critically ill patients and changing their lives — and their families’ lives — by giving them more time and better quality of life.”

Why We Created the All Star Payback Campaign

At All Star Healthcare Solutions, we believe in caring for the people who care for others. Our providers step into new communities, support exhausted teams, cover critical gaps, and ensure patient care never stops — no matter the challenge.

The Payback Campaign was designed to:

  • Celebrate the providers who keep healthcare moving
  • Share their stories to inspire others
  • Support clinicians with a financial boost
  • Highlight their impact on patient access and community care

We did it because these stories matter.
We did it because these professionals matter.
And we will continue doing it — every year — to honor more All Stars across the country.

Congratulations to Our Winners — and Thank You to Every Provider Who Entered

These five extraordinary professionals represent the very best of healthcare:

  • A PA who makes medicine feel human
  • A CRNA who brings care to underserved towns
  • A nephrologist who honors patients often overlooked
  • A pulmonologist who saves lives in the ICU
  • A cardiothoracic surgeon who repairs hearts — literally and figuratively

Their stories remind us why we show up every day.

To every clinician who participated in this year’s Payback Campaign:

Thank you for everything you do to make healthcare work.

Thank you for helping patients get the care they need.

Thank you for being All Stars.

All Star Payback Winner Spotlight: Dr. Waqas Memon — Compassion, Resolve, and the Heart Behind Nephrology

A Vow Made in Childhood

For many clinicians, the calling arrives slowly. For Dr. Memon, it arrived at age 12.

When asked what first inspired him to pursue medicine, he shared a pivotal memory — the story of his grandmother’s misdiagnosis and the lasting impact it had on his family.

“My mom told me the story of my grandmother and how she passed away due to a misdiagnosis. Even as a kid, I felt like it was wrong. I thought that would be my goal — to not allow that to happen to somebody else.”

That early promise became the spark that led him into medical school and, eventually, into nephrology.

Choosing the Hardest Path

Nephrology is one of medicine’s most complex specialties. For Dr. Memon, that was part of the appeal.

“With nephrology, it was the hardest field for me. My personality is that if there’s a challenge, I go for it. Nephrology involves all aspects of medicine.”

His determination to master the most difficult parts of medicine reflects his commitment to the whole human body — and the whole human experience.

A Moment That Confirmed His Purpose

During his second year of training, one night on call in the ICU became the moment he knew he had chosen the right specialty.

He cared for an extremely sick patient throughout the week, supporting both the patient and the family.

“The patient’s family appreciated me so much. They said, ‘We’ve never had a doctor sit down and explain things to us.’ It makes you feel respected and that your opinion matters.”

That combination of compassion and clarity is something families never forget.

Seeing Patients Who Are Often Overlooked

Kidney disease doesn’t always receive the attention that other chronic conditions do. Dr. Memon tries to change that.

“Patients with kidney disease aren’t the most focused-on group. They’re equally important but unfortunately not explored or talked about as much.”

His approach is to understand each patient’s story and provide care tailored to their needs.

Facing the Hardest Parts of Medicine

Every nephrologist knows the emotional weight that comes with caring for chronically ill patients. Dr. Memon reflected on the toughest part of the job:

“When you have a ‘goals-of-care’ discussion and you know the patient isn’t going to make it, that’s probably the hardest thing for a doctor.”

Even in these moments, he prioritizes rapport, empathy, and honesty.

Staying Grounded While Caring for Others

To stay balanced amid an emotionally demanding field, Dr. Memon follows a steady routine.

“The most important thing is having enough sleep, exercising as much as you can, and eating a balanced diet. If you don’t, you can get sick too.”

His advice is a powerful reminder that physicians must care for themselves as much as they care for others.

Why Locum Tenens? Family Comes First

Like many clinicians, Dr. Memon sought a path that allowed him to practice medicine while being fully present for his family.

“I have two small children, and being part of a big nephrology group took away time from my kids. With locums, I’m able to make close to what I was making before while still having time at home — picking them up from school and spending time with them.”

That balance — meaningful work and meaningful time — is exactly what locum tenens can provide.

Connecting With All Star

His first connection with All Star came through an email from his recruiter, Amy McFate.

“I think I got an email from Amy. I replied, and the rest is history.”

Since then?

“It’s been great. You guys are very helpful and accommodating in all ways. It’s been an amazing experience so far.”

Entering the Payback Contest

Amy also encouraged him to enter the Payback Campaign.

“She said it would be a good way to make a little extra and also tell my story. That was the main thing — to share why I decided to do locums.”

As for the prize?

“My wife has a lot of loans, so most likely to help her.”

A perfect use of a Payback award.

Finishing the Sentence: “Being a nephrologist means…”

We ended the interview with a simple fill-in-the-blank. His answer perfectly captures the heart of his practice:

“Being a nephrologist means caring for somebody holistically, getting to know their families, and being able to care for them in an efficient way.”

That is exactly who Dr. Waqas Memon is — a physician who treats not just kidneys, but people; not just patients, but families.

Congratulations, Dr. Memon!

We are honored to recognize you as a 2025 All Star Payback winner. Thank you for the compassion, intelligence, and humanity you bring to medicine each day.

All Star Payback Winner Spotlight: Dr. Taiwen Chen — Finding Purpose, Balance, and Renewal in Critical Care

A Life-Saving Calling

From her earliest memories, Dr. Taiwen Chen knew she was destined for medicine. Influenced by a family member who had polio and was paralyzed, she found her purpose early — helping others heal.

“I’ve always wanted to do medicine,” Dr. Chen shared. “A family member who had polio inspired me to do something that would help her and other people. Critical care drew me in during medical school. It’s fast-paced, you care for the sickest of the sick, and it’s incredibly rewarding when patients leave your ICU healthy.”

For Dr. Chen, every day in medicine offers powerful, humbling reminders of why she chose this path.

“There are many defining moments,” she said. “Every time someone comes off life support after everyone said they wouldn’t survive — and then they come back two years later to say thank you — that’s what makes it all worth it.”

The COVID-19 pandemic made those moments even more profound. It also reinforced an important truth: even those who dedicate their lives to healing others must find ways to heal and recharge themselves.

Rediscovering Balance Through Locum Tenens Work

After years of tireless service in both hospital and clinic settings, Dr. Chen felt the strain of burnout during the pandemic. Locum tenens work through All Star Healthcare Solutions gave her the reset she needed.

“I decided to take time off and do locums on my schedule instead of someone else’s,” she explained. “It let me travel to different parts of the country, see new hospitals, and reaffirm what I love about medicine — while giving me more autonomy over when I work.”

That sense of freedom and renewal reignited her love for medicine. Along the way, her All Star recruiter, Farah Eid, became an invaluable partner.

“Farah has been great. She keeps after me, looks out for opportunities, and makes sure everything’s going well.”

What Makes All Star Different

Having worked with several staffing organizations, Dr. Chen says All Star stands out for its personal touch and genuine care.

“I like smaller locums companies. With some large ones, you get moved from one recruiter to another, and no one knows your preferences. All Star feels more personal — they know what you like.”

That personal connection extended beyond her assignments. It’s how she first heard about the All Star Payback Contest — a quick conversation with Farah that turned into an unexpected surprise.

“Who knew? One entry was enough, and here we are!” she laughed.

Paying It Forward — and Taking a Break

After learning she was one of five national Payback winners, Dr. Chen knew exactly how she wanted to share the joy.

“We’d love to travel — maybe a cruise or another trip,” she said. “Medicine is hard, and life comes at you fast. You have to enjoy your family and your time away so you come back refreshed.”

She plans to share part of her prize with her family, especially her daughter who’s in college, as a way to celebrate together.

Purpose That Lasts a Lifetime

When asked what being a critical care physician means to her, Dr. Chen answered simply but powerfully:

“It means having the ability to help the sickest of the sick.”

And the most rewarding part?

“Seeing someone survive the ICU or breathe easier again. Helping families through tough times — that’s what keeps me going.”

To Dr. Chen, All Star Healthcare Solutions is more than a staffing company — it’s a partner that embodies the same compassion and connection she brings to her work.

“All Star is very hands-on, very friendly, and has more of a community feel than the corporate side.”

Celebrating All Star Payback Winners

The All Star Payback Contest was created to celebrate the dedication and impact of healthcare professionals across the country — people who go above and beyond to care for others.
Dr. Taiwen Chen embodies everything this campaign was meant to honor: courage, compassion, and commitment to healing.

Congratulations, Dr. Chen — and thank you for reminding us that purpose, balance, and heart are the true rewards of medicine.

All Star Payback Winner Spotlight: Lance Machado, CRNA — Compassion, Skill, and Service in Every Setting

A Calling Rooted in Community and Family

Long before he stepped into the operating room as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), Lance Machado understood the challenges of living in a community with limited access to care. Growing up in rural Kansas shaped his early desire to make a difference.

As he shared:

“Originally, I grew up in a small-town area in Kansas, so there was not very much care there. Resources were limited, so getting care often meant traveling long distances. I thought it’d be nice to join the healthcare workforce and hopefully help bring some of those resources to areas that don't have them.”

His journey was also shaped by watching his father navigate multiple health challenges:

“My father had several comorbidities growing up, and I remember he had a lot of struggles. When he would need to see specialists, there were few of them, and it took a very long time to get into their clinics because they're so busy.”

While nursing was his initial path, CRNA work wasn’t on his radar until mentors introduced him to the field. After working as an ICU nurse in trauma, cardiac, and general surgery, the blend of critical thinking and hands-on skill captured his interest.

“It was a combination of the mental task work of thinking in terms of science and taking care of patients on a critical level, and also the aspect of working with my hands. It combined two things I was really interested in.”

A Defining Moment in Training

Every CRNA carries certain patient stories with them — the ones that reaffirm why their work matters. For Lance, one unforgettable experience came during his training.

“I remember in school taking care of a particular patient who was very sick. They didn’t look very good at first, but slowly they started to improve over time.”

He followed the patient’s progress long after surgery:

“Eventually that individual got to a point where they were exiting critical care. It was a great feeling that the services we were providing were making a real difference in a person's life who might otherwise not be here today.”

That experience reinforced his commitment to a profession where expertise, calm, and presence can change the course of someone’s life.

Guiding Patients Through Their Toughest Day

For many patients, the day of surgery is filled with fear and uncertainty. Lance sees it as his responsibility — and privilege — to ease those fears.

“Many patients I talk to are very scared on the day of surgery. Being able to talk to them, provide transparency on what's going to happen, and offer reassurance is really important to me.”

When patients return afterward feeling relieved and supported, he knows he’s done his job well:

“Those things mean a lot to me. It’s a very rewarding day when patients come back telling you things went so well.”

Facing Complexity with Skill and Calm

As patient populations grow older and more medically complex, anesthesia care becomes increasingly challenging.

“Unfortunately, in the United States, our population is getting older and much sicker. On many days you find yourself taking care of someone who has many comorbidities, and that can be stressful.”

Preparation, he says, makes all the difference:

“Good planning up front takes away a lot of the guesswork. Thorough plans for the patients are very helpful.”

To stay centered, he focuses on physical and mental well-being:

“I try to exercise and hike and stay grounded so that when I'm at work in stressful environments, I can think clearly and provide the best care I can.”

A Passion for Locum Tenens and Supporting Underserved Hospitals

Lance was drawn to locum tenens work for the same reason he pursued healthcare: to support communities in need.

“I met some people who were doing locums, and they were able to provide care in a hospital that was struggling to staff. Many of the hospitals where I grew up were poorly staffed. It feels good to help make sure patients are getting the care they need.”

He quickly saw how meaningful the support was — not just to patients, but also to exhausted staff.

“If they're running a skeleton crew, it's difficult for them to take vacations or go home to their kids. When I come in ready to work long hours and help them out, they're very appreciative.”

Connecting with All Star Healthcare Solutions

Lance first connected with All Star through his recruiter, Hannah Fenster, whose support made the onboarding process smooth and personal.

“I connected with Hannah, and she’s done a fantastic job getting me onboarded and answering my questions in a timely fashion. It’s been a good colleague-like relationship.”

He appreciates All Star’s efficient, personal approach:

“It seems like a smaller, no-nonsense group. With bigger conglomerates, you feel like a number. With All Star, everything went very smoothly.”

Winning the All Star Payback Contest

Lance discovered the Payback campaign on a whim — and his dog Steve became an unexpected co-star.

“I received an email. I was taking my dog Steve out to play fetch, and I saw the email pop up. I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s just go for it.’”

Winning came as a complete surprise:

“I feel like I’ve entered a bunch of them and never win. This was on a whim. This is fun because I never win these things.”

As for his plans?

“My wife and I just found our first home together. Part of the yard is not fenced in, so this is going toward fencing the yard for my dog Steve. He’s really going to appreciate this.”

Celebrating Lance and All Star’s Payback Winners

The All Star Payback Contest honors healthcare professionals who bring dedication, heart, and expertise to every patient encounter. Lance Machado, CRNA, exemplifies that spirit through his compassion, preparedness, and unwavering commitment to patient care — from rural Kansas to operating rooms across the country.

Congratulations, Lance — and congratulations to Steve on his soon-to-be fenced-in yard. Your story reminds us why caring for those who care for others matters.

All Star Payback Winner Spotlight: Courtney Kingston, PA-C — Strength, Resilience, and Balance in Action

Inspired by Family and a Defining Moment

For Courtney Kingston, the path to becoming a physician assistant (PA) began with family. Her cousin, who attended PA school, lived with her family for a time while Courtney was still in middle school. Those everyday conversations — hearing about classes, patients, and experiences — left a lasting impression.

“My cousin, who's quite a bit older, actually lived with us for a few semesters of PA school. And so, I was in middle school, and you know, we just kind of debriefed with her at the end of the day. And when she became a practicing PA, I actually got to shadow her, and I was kind of wanting to be a PA anyway, but the first time she let me listen to a patient's heart, it kind of just solidified it for me. And I know I was super young, about 13, but kind of from there I just felt like I had a path written out and I followed and kind of never looked back.”

That single, powerful moment — hearing a patient’s heartbeat for the first time — set her on a path she’s followed ever since.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose

The journey to becoming a PA is known for its rigor, and Courtney embraced that challenge head-on.

“I would say the most challenging part of the journey to becoming a PA is just how you are thrown into all these different environments really quickly. And for instance, you might come off of a night shift and have to be back at a clinic at 8:00 AM and just kind of really learning, trying to adapt, working alongside different types of patients, different specialties, different providers, different settings, whether that be in a clinic versus the hospital versus the OR and really trying to learn and solidify your knowledge in the meantime. That is certainly challenging, but it certainly builds a lot of resilience as well and I think ultimately made me a better PA and what keeps me motivated is really just those patients you look back on where you really feel like you made a difference and even on the hardest days, I can kind of look back, think back to those patients and realize why I did this and why I want to keep going.”

Each rotation, each long shift, each new setting taught her adaptability — and deepened her commitment to care.

Making Care More Human

Courtney’s approach to medicine centers on compassion and understanding. She sees her role not only as a medical professional, but as a guide and advocate for patients and their families.

“Being a PA hopefully makes a difference for patients and their families because I feel that I have a little bit more time than other providers to talk with the patients and really walk them through it because I acknowledge that most of them did not go to some medical training and a lot of the stuff is really scary and confusing and they don't understand the terminology, which I don't expect them to understand. And so something that I'm honored to do is kind of walk along with them and embrace down, answer questions and to make procedures or diagnosis, treatments, things like that a little bit less scary and you know, hopefully make it a place they don't hate coming anymore.”

That empathy — taking time to explain, listen, and reassure — is what makes her such an impactful provider.

A Payback Win and a Grateful Heart

Courtney discovered the All Star Payback Contest while scrolling through Instagram — and almost didn’t enter.

“I first heard of the All Star Payback actually on Instagram and I saw that you should submit a video for more entries and I kind of just kept putting it off. I finally put it on my To Do List to get done right before Halloween and I am just thrilled that I did it.”

Her decision paid off — literally and figuratively. Winning gave her the opportunity to reconnect with family and to give back in her own way.

“My husband and I have been talking about it. I'm really hopeful that I can travel home to see my family and we would like to donate a little bit of it as well. A lot of people need it a little bit more than me right now and then we're hoping to put the rest away for future investments.”

Resilience and Balance

When asked what advice she’d share with others pursuing a PA career, Courtney offered a simple but powerful reminder.

“Some advice I would give is to just push through. And I don’t say that in like a ‘oh, just put your head down and don’t take care of yourself,’ but it gets better. PA school is certainly very difficult, but there's a reason why the rigor is so high because you do come into these situations when you're a practicing PA where it's really tough. You might be the only one there to help someone or an emergency, and so being able to have gone through that rigor earlier on in PA school again really builds resilience and allows you to just be a better medical provider in general.”

And for staying balanced amid long shifts and emotional days, she finds renewal in movement and self-care.

“The best way I have found to keep myself inspired and balanced is actually exercise. And I know a lot of times at the end of a long day, a long shift, kind of the last thing you want to do is go to the gym. But I have found that really helps me kind of work through some hard emotions from the day if I experience that or kind of give myself a happiness boost at the gym with some endorphins. And I found that keeping myself healthy and accountable and doing the things that I recommend for my patients allows me to show up better for myself and for my patients.”

What It Means to Be a PA

For Courtney, being a physician assistant is about connection — being part of something bigger and contributing to community health.

“Being a PA means joining the large healthcare system to be a partner in the community's health. It allows further access to care and better, cohesive treatment for the patient.”

And the most rewarding part of it all?

“The most rewarding part of my work is when I have a patient who is struggling, whatever that may be, and they come back and they say their life has changed and that doesn't always happen, but when it does, it is just truly so rewarding and reminds me why I do what I do.”

Celebrating All Star Payback Winners

The All Star Payback Contest was created to recognize and celebrate healthcare professionals who bring heart, excellence, and humanity to their work.
Courtney Kingston exemplifies all of those qualities — and reminds us that resilience and compassion truly define what it means to care for others.

Congratulations, Courtney, and thank you for representing the spirit of All Star Healthcare Solutions with such grace, heart, and authenticity. Check out Courtney's video what being a healthcare provider means to her below.

All Star Payback Winner Spotlight: Dr. John Anastasi — Precision, Purpose, and Passion in Cardiothoracic Surgery

A Life Redirected Toward Medicine

For Dr. John Anastasi, the path to cardiothoracic surgery was anything but straightforward. What began as a plan to become a veterinarian shifted several times before he found his true calling in one of medicine’s most demanding specialties.

As he recalls:

“My original plan was to be a veterinarian, and I was not able to get into veterinary school. I had actually planned on being a biology school teacher. But I got a call from a college I had applied to, and they asked if I wanted to be in pre-med, which is what got me into pre-med.”

The defining moment came during his fourth year of college, through a family connection and a health scare.

“My sister was a nurse at NYU and was dating a cardiac surgeon. I was having palpitations, and she told me to come into the city because he could take a look. When I got there, he had an emergency, so she took me over to NYU and brought me into the OR. It was the first time I saw open heart surgery. I was in there for about six or seven hours. When we walked out, he looked at me and said, ‘Greatest job in the world.’ And that’s when I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Thriving in One of Medicine’s Most Demanding Fields

Cardiothoracic surgery demands precision, stamina, and unwavering focus. For Dr. Anastasi, what drives him is a genuine love for the work.

“I love doing it. I love the work, the procedures, and taking care of patients in that fashion. It’s immediate gratification. With cardiac surgery, you have a problem, you go in, and two hours later the problem is fixed. For me, it’s immediate gratification.”

Staying Centered Through Multitasking and Passion

Balancing the intensity of cardiothoracic surgery with a creative life beyond medicine requires discipline and passion — something Dr. Anastasi has refined over years of practice.

“People ask me how I do all that and run to different hospitals and operate. You get to a level of multitasking where you can just fit it all in. You do what’s important to you. I don’t sleep a lot. As my father used to say, ‘You’re a long time dead, so you’ll have plenty of time to sleep after you’re dead.’ I use every minute I’ve got.”

In addition to surgery, he is also an accomplished playwright and screenwriter, bringing the same energy and dedication to creative work that he brings to patient care.

Continuously Evolving in a Rapidly Changing Field

Medical advances move quickly, and Dr. Anastasi makes it a priority to stay engaged with new techniques and innovations.

“You go to the meetings and find out what new information is out there. I’ve always kept up with the newest things we’re doing. Now I have a niche in minimally invasive heart surgery at Altman, and I get a lot of the minimally invasive aortic valves and mitral valves.”

Discovering Locum Tenens and Finding Flexibility

Locum tenens wasn’t part of Dr. Anastasi’s early career. For many years in Pennsylvania, he was fully dedicated to building a large cardiothoracic and vascular program. As procedure volumes evolved with new technologies like stents and angioplasties, his schedule opened up, introducing him to the idea of locum work.

In 2016, he was approached about his first assignment. After spending two decades operating at the same hospital, the thought of practicing in unfamiliar facilities was daunting. But once he explored locum opportunities, he discovered the meaningful benefits of working with new teams, expanding his skills, and experiencing different hospital environments.

He credits trusted representatives — including C. Jay Kohlback — for supporting him through the transition and helping place him in well-matched, supportive hospitals. While not every assignment was the right fit, most were positive experiences that offered flexibility, meaningful work, and additional financial stability.

What Being a Cardiothoracic Surgeon Means

When asked to complete the sentence “Being a cardiothoracic surgeon means…,” Dr. Anastasi offered a definition rooted in purpose and impact:

“It means being able to take care of the most critically ill patients and most of the time having successful outcomes, changing their lives and their families’ lives by extending their lives and giving them a better quality of life.”

A Well-Deserved Celebration

Before wrapping up, Dr. Anastasi expressed his appreciation — and surprise — at being selected as an All Star Payback winner.

“Thank you very much for the opportunity and for the contest. I told C. Jay I never won anything in my life, so I thought that was something.”

Honoring Dr. Anastasi and All Star Payback Winners

The All Star Payback Contest was created to recognize healthcare professionals whose skill, dedication, and compassion make a profound impact on patients and communities.
Dr. John Anastasi exemplifies that mission — a surgeon whose precision saves lives, whose passion inspires others, and whose story reminds us that purpose often emerges in the most unexpected ways.

Congratulations, Dr. Anastasi. We’re honored to share your journey.

A Guide to Strategic Staffing for Health Systems

Health systems are running a marathon on a treadmill. They’re sprinting to meet rising demand, jumping hurdles of workforce burnout, and pushing through steep inclines of budget pressure.

But traditional hiring models can’t keep up. So, what’s the solution? Find out in our latest guide.

  • You can’t out-hire a workforce crisis.
Learn how health systems are using locum tenens to stay ahead of demand.
  • Burnout. Bottlenecks. Budget pressure.
Discover how strategic staffing can break the cycle and protect your teams.
  • The $1M mistake: Losing just one physician.
Find out how smart locum planning helps prevent revenue loss and team strain.

The new baseline: Rising demand, limited supply

The U.S. health system is operating under a new normal where demand continues to rise while the supply of physicians lags behind. The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a national shortfall of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, with shortages cutting across primary and specialty care. That imbalance is already visible at the front line.

Nearly half of physicians still report burnout, a sign that today’s workforce is stretched too thin to meet current needs, let alone future growth.

Locum Tenens Providers: The Heartbeat of Healthcare Access

Every day, locum tenens providers step in where and when they are needed most—ensuring that patients across the country receive uninterrupted, high-quality care. This National Locum Tenens Week, All Star Healthcare Solutions proudly joins the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations (NALTO) in honoring these extraordinary physicians and advanced practitioners.

Why Locum Tenens Providers Matter

More than 90% of healthcare facilities in the U.S. rely on locum tenens professionals to fill essential roles during staffing gaps, seasonal surges, or transitions. These dedicated clinicians are the heartbeat of healthcare access—delivering expert care, compassion, and stability at critical moments.

Whether supporting a rural oncology clinic or a large metropolitan hospital, locum tenens providers do more than fill shifts. They bridge gaps in care, uplift care teams, and offer hope and healing to patients in need.

One Provider’s Story: Making a Lasting Impact

Earlier this year, a hospital in Kentucky turned to All Star Healthcare Solutions for critical support in its cancer center. Our team moved into action and placed oncologist Dr. Obiageli Ogbata, who brought not only clinical expertise but also mentorship, empathy, and dedication.

“The feedback we received from that facility was inspiring,” said Ken Bernstein, CEO of All Star. “Dr. Ogbata became a beacon of hope for patients and staff alike. Her story exemplifies the profound difference one locums provider can make.”

A Growing Commitment to Access and Impact

In our continued effort to expand access to care and better support the healthcare systems we serve, All Star recently acquired Integrity Locums, a respected, award-winning locum tenens staffing firm.

“We are thrilled to welcome Integrity Locums into the All Star family,” Bernstein added. “Together, we’re extending our reach, deepening our service, and empowering more clinicians to make a difference—one patient and one community at a time.”

This strategic integration strengthens our national footprint and reinforces our shared commitment to provider support, human-centered service, and extraordinary patient outcomes.

Celebrating Locum Tenens Week 2025

This week, and every week, All Star salutes the thousands of clinicians who choose the locum tenens path. Their adaptability, resilience, and heart enable healthcare systems to continue operating—especially in times of uncertainty.

We honor these professionals not just for the roles they fill, but for the compassion they bring to every assignment. They are more than providers—they are mentors, leaders, and healers who bring care to life.

Getting Started in Your New Role

Once you’ve chosen a locum tenens nurse practitioner role and you’re ready to start pursuing the next phase of your career with help from All Star, it’s time to set your expectations for the early days of your new position. Here are some pro tips from our staffing experts on how to make the most of your first days on the job.

Understand that Orientation Might Be Brief

Often, locum tenens nurse practitioner positions are available because the permanent staff is overworked or shorthanded. They really need someone to hit the ground running and start making a difference right away. So maximize your orientation time with really targeted questions like:

  • What are the EHR systems?
  • What are the emergency protocols?
  • What is the referral process?
  • What are the local pharmacy and lab procedures?
  • How does work flow through the practice?
  • Who are the key contacts for the practice?

Make a Great First Impression

Sometimes you’ll be going into clinic settings that are a little stressed or tense. Short staffing can make even the most supportive and welcoming new coworkers edgy at times. The best thing for you to do is to be as friendly, positive, and adaptable as possible in your early days.

Understand Your Scope of Practice

Just like cultures can differ from one clinic to the next, practice norms can differ from healthcare system to healthcare system. It’s important that you understand things like:

  • Your level of autonomy in that state
  • What situations require physician collaboration
  • What protocols and restrictions exist in that facility
  • How schedules and rotations are created

Get to Know the Chain of Command

We know you’ll be meeting a lot of new people and learning a lot of new things in your new locum tenens role, but it’s important that you know things like:

  • Who you report to
  • How to escalate clinical issues
  • Who handles vital functions like scheduling, ordering, and patient feedback

Protect Your License

Regardless of who is covering your malpractice insurance—your staffing agency, the employer, or yourself—make sure it’s active and that you have appropriate coverage. You don’t want to make any mistakes where insurance and your coverage are concerned.

Get to Know the Patient Population

Every community has its own cultural norms and health trends, so getting to know the patient population will help you treat them with more empathy. Understanding things like language preferences, social determinants, and prevalent conditions can help you deliver better care.

Stay Organized

Locum tenens positions for nurse practitioners can come with a lot of paperwork, so make sure you keep copies of your important documents in a safe, accessible location. Contracts, insurance policies, and licenses should all be stored in filing cabinets, safety deposit boxes, or lock boxes to keep them organized and reachable.

  • Tip from an All Star Pro: Keep detailed notes and write down anything unusual or concerning that you may experience during your locum tenens contract. Don’t forget to date your records just in case you need them in the future.

Communicate Early and Often

No one wants to be a squeaky wheel, but proactive communication with All Star and the on-site team is critical to resolving issues quickly and effectively. It’s OK to speak up if you see something you don’t agree with, and it’s important to keep everyone in the loop.

Be Adaptable

Even the most well-prepared facilities may have gaps or surprises in store, and we all know that processes and protocols change from practice to practice, so keep your cool and stay focused on delivering high-quality care.

  • Tip from an All Star Pro: Don’t forget that we’re here to help with tricky situations like scope creep, scheduling breakdowns, or other issues.

Choosing the Locum Tenens Companies

We know that this guide is an exciting introduction into the world of locum tenens for nurse practitioners, taking you through the process from beginning to end. Before you get started though, we wanted to highlight one of the most critical facets—finding, selecting and partnering with the ideal nurse practitioner staffing agency. There are lots of things to consider, and in this section, we’re going to highlight the most important.

Reputation Counts

Do your research and learn about the staffing agency’s reputation in the industry and online. Talk to your colleagues, check online reviews, and follow them on social media to get a feel for how they show up in the world. Look for:

  • Positive reviews on nurse practitioner forums, social media, and employment platforms like Glassdoor
  • How long they’ve been in business and how many advanced practitioners they’ve helped
  • Recognition and accolades from professional associations
  • Client and employer testimonials

All Star is proud to have a national reputation for excellence in advanced practitioner staffing services, with over 30 years of experience and an ever-growing network.

Experience Counts

While young startup staffing agencies might be enthusiastic, they lack the experience necessary to place advanced practitioners like you in high-quality positions. You need a staffing agency that understands:

  • Your scope of practice
  • Your licensing needs
  • Your credentialing timelines
  • Your insurance obligations

Communication Counts

Your time is valuable and your schedule is busy, which is why you should only partner with a staffing agency that respects your time, understands your goals, and goes above and beyond to keep you informed throughout the process. Ask yourself:

  • Are they up front about rates, locations, and responsibilities?
  • Do they respond quickly and clearly to questions or concerns?
  • Do they explain contract terms effectively, making every effort to clarify key points?

Support Counts

The right nurse practitioner staffing agency does so much more than just compiling lists of opportunities and emailing them over once a week. A truly professional staffing agency will have all the resources to help you navigate the locum tenens process, providing help with things like:

  • Navigating multi-state licensure and compact states
  • Handling your paperwork and timelines
  • Covering your application fees or assisting with reimbursement

Coverage Counts

Your staffing agency should have processes in place to help with your malpractice insurance coverage. Whether they provide it directly to their clients or they facilitate malpractice insurance provisions through employers, they should ensure that you’re provided with:

  • Occurrence-based or claims-made insurance with tail coverage
  • Adequate and appropriate policy limits
  • Appropriate insurance documentation and copies of your policies

Compensation Counts

You should be able to rely on your staffing agency to fully explain and outline the pay rates, policies, stipends, and other financial arrangements you’ll need for your locum tenens role.

Variety Counts

Another reason to select an established, well-respected agency like All Star is that we can offer a wide range of opportunities, filtered by state, specialty, setting, and duration. We make it possible to truly tailor your experience without compromising on what matters most to you.

Relationships Count

There’s no point in partnering with a recruiter who doesn’t listen to your goals and advocate for your preferences. Instead, build a strong, long-term partnership with a staffing agency like All Star that respects you and wants to build a lasting relationship with you. No matter what staffing agency you ultimately select, make sure you:

  • Will have a consistent, reliable point of contact
  • Know how often they’ll check in
  • Ask for references and referrals from other advanced practitioners and employers

Quality Counts

The best staffing agencies, like All Star, are compliant, ethical, and committed to providing the highest quality experience for everyone involved. We are here to put our expertise, network, and experience to work for you as your career advocates.
